Under 14 Friendly with Richmond JCC

We had a very keen squad of players at the West Maldon Community Centre on Saturday 11 February ready to play our first under 14 fixture for over a year!!  Sadly, the proposed match with Middlesex did not come to fruition but we were very pleased and grateful to welcome a team of eleven players from the Richmond Junior Chess Club for a friendly match.

Although we outgraded our opponents, junior grades quickly become unrealistic for some players and many of our team had some very competitive games, especially on the higher boards.  Nevertheless, it was probably our greater experience and strength in depth that ensured we won both rounds comfortably and finished with a match score of 15½ to 6½ in favour of Essex.

It was good to see many of the Essex team keen to play additional graded games with each other and demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm.  Hopefully, this will continue through to our next fixture against Kent.

So congratulations to all the players and thanks also to the parents for their support!  All help on the day was very much appreciated and a very big thank you to Sally for providing the excellent refreshments.
