Under 14s Continue Good Form in Surrey

The under 14 team played their third fixture of 2017/18 away against Surrey at Wilson’s School, Wallington on 24 February 2018.  The Team Manager was pleased to be able to bring a strong team, including reserves, and we soon built up a healthy lead in the first round although there were several hard fought games.  The top three boards were the last to finish but were all eventually won by Essex despite this looking unlikely until the closing stages of the games.  This left us with a 10½ to 1½ lead at the interval between the games.

For the second round our team was boosted further by the arrival of Urbi Modhura (current Essex Junior Champion*) and sister Purba Audhora who wasted no time by winning her game in just eight moves!  The Surrey team also added a new player at board 4 and apart from the early loss they fought hard to make the scoreline more respectable.  The final result was a 19½ to 4½ victory to Essex.

This was an excellent result especially as over recent years we have had many tough matches away in Surrey.  The players are demonstrating plenty of confidence and ability which needs to continue for our next match with Kent.  A victory will see us through to the Final of the tournament again.

Thanks to all parents for their excellent support and also to Debbie Yu, the Surrey match captain for all her efficient organisation.  Full details of the team scores should appear on https://sccu-chess.com/index.php/en/east-league-17-18 at some point.
