The Essex u14 team has played two matches on consecutive weekends most recently against Surrey at home on 6 February.  This proved to be an excellent fixture with many very competitive games and Essex just edged the first round by 7 to 5.  In the first round our top boards made little impression on the strong Surrey players but the second round was a different story and the whole team steadily accumulated enough points to win the match by the healthy margin of 15½ to 8½.  Wins against Surrey can be quite rare but it was a well deserved performance with every member of the team contributing towards the final score.

Thanks to all parents for their help with refreshments, coaching and organisation - it all helps to ensure that our home fixtures go well.

The previous week on 30 January we made the trip to Twickenham to play the Richmond Junior Chess Club.  This was an arduous trip for some players who encountered traffic delays but worst of all for three players who were in a broken down vehicle on the M25.  With only one extra player available we had to default two boards in round one and this helped to ensure that our opponents had a clear lead going into the second round.

Thankfully, we were back up to full strength for the second round of games and at first we picked up many wins to reduce the deficit.  Sadly for our team Richmond scored crucial wins in many of the last games to finish and our opponents won a close match by 13 to 11.  Thanks to Richmond JCC for their hospitality - we look forward to playing them at home next year.
