Victory over Kent for the under 14s

The Under 14 Team played Kent in the Eastern Zone of the SCCU tournament on 11 March at the Kings Road Primary School in Chelmsford.

Some of the games proved to be very long and competitive in the first round but the Essex team worked hard at some difficult positions and finished with a score of 8½ to 3½.  I have witnessed a few occasions when Essex teams have squandered first round leads but this time in the second round they quickly amassed the four points needed to ensure victory.  Many of the games finished quickly in round two leaving the Weersing sisters to score the final points.  Abigail drew a long game to go with her first round win and Sarah won a King & Queen v King & Rook ending.  The second round score was identical to the first giving a final match score of Essex 17 Kent 7.

Thanks to the Kent team for an enjoyable and sporting match.  Well done to the team and my appreciation is also due to the following for their help and support

  • The Reserve players for turning out and supporting the team
  • All parents and players who helped with setting up and packing up
  • Sally for providing excellent refreshments again

With Middlesex not playing any matches, this means Essex goes through to play Sussex, the winners of the Western Zone.  This will be a home fixture on a date to be arranged.  Last time we reached the final the team narrowly lost to Surrey so it would be great to win this time!
