Essex u14s Start with a Win
Our first match in the SCCU u14 tournament was played at the URC Church in Chelmsford on Sunday, 24 November against Sussex.
As usual, the Sussex team was very competitive and after the first round the visitors were leading by half a point. Despite this minor setback, the Essex players demonstrated their fighting spirit by coming though the second round by a four point margin and therefore finishing as winners by 13½ to 10½.
The full result may be viewed on the SCCU website –
This was an especially pleasing result as it was a young Essex team and for many of the players it was their first under 14 team match. There was also a good turnout of squad players who played reserve matches or graded games against other Essex players. All players, including reserves are an important part of the team and it was very encouraging to see so many players and have a successful start to our matches in 2013/14.
Thanks also go to all the parents who assisted in many aspects of the organisation of this fixture.
Robin Slade, the Junior Organiser of Chelmsford Chess Club attended the match and Ivor Smith, President of the Essex Chess Association was there for much of the second round. Robin made the following comment “Congratulations to all of you involved in the U14 match on Sunday - The top 12 boards, the subs, the winners and the losers. I was really impressed with the effort and concentration you put in and the quality of chess you produced. You all deserve to share in the team’s victory. Good luck in the next match.”
The next match is away against Kent on 8 December and we will be playing Surrey and Middlesex in the New Year.
